‘A Radio Grandpa’

Reaction is still arriving to the news that Energy-Onix Founder Bernie Wise is dead.

Paul Thurst calls Wise “a true radio guy” who understood the business of transmitter manufacturing. “The Energy-Onix facility is located close to me and I have stopped in there often over the years, sometimes just to chat,” he tells RW.

“He was like a radio grandpa to me,” said Randal Miller, president of the Miller Media Group/Regional Radio/Hometown Illinois Radio Network. Wise sold some him “many, many transmitters, exciters, and STL systems since the mid-1990s.”

Wise had a great intellect and was a boon to broadcasting, according to Kyle Magrill of CircuitWerkes. “It was my honor to have known him for more than 25 years and I only wish I’d met him sooner. His wit and dry humor will be missed as will his presence at the NAB.”

A memorial service is planned for Wise on Jan. 25.

Wise died Dec. 13 after a long illness; he was 87.
