Is McDowell's FCC Seat Secure?

05.14.2009

The re-nomination of FCC commissioner Robert McDowell may be in doubt.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the re-seating of McDowell, whose term is up in June, may not be the shoe-in observers had believed it would be.

McDowell is the sole Republican commissioner at the moment.Republicans on the Hill are said to be lobbying to delay nomination hearings for Democrats Julius Genachowski, nominated for chairman, and Mignon Clyburn, nominated as a commissioner, until they can get a GOP nominee in the nomination hearing as well.

Genachowski's hearing was cancelled abruptly last week shortly after it was announced.

The Commission needs to be balanced. Any governmental entity that is fully loaded with people who share only one ideology will run amok. Even if it were true that McDowell shared ideology with McSlarrow doesn't disqualify him from being a good commissioner. Compromise is what keeps government working for all of the people. There should be more than one Republican on the FCC. This also true if the tables were turned and Republicans were in control.

Rob McDowell is a tool of the cable industry. He's a tool of Kyle McSlarrow the conservative Northern Viriginia Republican head of National Cable Television Association. Everyone knows that when Kyle says jump Rob McDowell says how high. Time for McDowell to go.
