First Toyotas With HD Radio Traffic, Weather Available

The first Toyota cars with a radio that receives FM HD Radio-delivered real-time traffic and weather services have arrived at dealerships.

Toyota says its 2014 Tundra, Corolla, Sequoia, 4Runner, and Tacoma are its first vehicles to launch integrated audio and real-time traffic and weather services using Clear Channel’s Total Traffic HD Network and HD Radio technology. The broadcaster says its traffic service has more than 2,000 affiliate stations.

The 2014 Toyota Corolla, Tundra and Sequoia are at dealerships now while the 4Runner and Tacoma arrive on the lots later this month.

Toyota has two systems that integrate HD Radio audio entertainment with TTN’s real-time traffic and weather. The systems differentiate whether or not your vehicle includes navigation.

Toyota USA VP Connected Vehicle Technology Sandy Lobenstein says with its Entune app suite-enabled systems, Toyota is the first automaker to offer consumers “hybrid data” technology that automatically switches to send traffic and weather data over the Internet via a cellphone when the user drives out of range of the station transmitting the HD Radio signal. That’s the audio/data technology Toyota uses for cars that have a navigation system.

For vehicles without navigation, Toyota says it will offer a “premium” display audio system, including the traffic and weather maps and weather information delivered by the HD Radio stations. Both audio systems include the Artist Experience feature, in which the audio is synched with visual elements like album art and displayed on the receiver.

Ibiquity Digital COO Jeff Jury calls Toyota’s dual offerings “compelling” and says automakers are offering the latest HD Radio audio and data features very quickly.
