Latest Fraunhofer Codec Developments From IBC
     


In a world where content increasingly is purchased from and consumed via nontraditional sources, the codec gurus at Fraunhofer often are involved in some manner.

In Amsterdam at the IBC Show, the German technology organization showed several twists on its audio and video coding technologies.

For instance, HE-AAC 5.1 surround sound from Android smartphones and tablets via home theater systems. Such capabilities are part of an audio processing library for firmware development kits for Android 4.1.

Another announcement concerned Version 2, a second generation version of the Sonnox Fraunhofer Pro-Codec Plug-In. The plug-in is designed for MPEG encoding. Version 2 adds Apple iTunes Plus compatibility along with HE-AAC and AAC-LC multichannel surround sound support.
