Mexico’s communications regulator is authorizing stations in the border area with the United States to use HD Radio as their digital radio technology on a voluntary basis.

The decision affects stations within some 200 miles of the United States.

In its decision, Mexico’s Federal Telecommunications Commission, or Cofetel, said the actions are aimed at preserving the right to use the spectrum allocated and assigned to Mexico in bilateral agreements.

Cofetel said applicants who wish to transmit digitally with HD Radio must deliver both an analog and digital signal and submit quarterly reports of the station operation for at least two years once they begin IBOC operation.

Mexico has a total of 1,577 radio stations, according to Cofetel.
