For those who like to do their program production audio processing the old-fashioned way, yet in a modern digital way, Universal Audio is always good friend.

The latest plug-ins from the software developer and hardware manufacturer are a Pultec Passive EQ plug-in collection and a plug-in emulation of Millennia’s prized NSEQ-2 parametric EQ.

The Pultec collection consists of an EQP-1A, MEQ-5 and an HLF-3C filter. For the uninitiated, these, in their hardware form from five decades ago, would have been highly desirable recording studio equipment and were used on many hit records at numerous studios. Modern hardware copies run over $2,500 and working used models are much more.

Each tube-based EQ (the HLF-3C is actually a 12 dB low- and high-cut filter) matches the Pultec hardware version in GUI, controls and, according to Universal Audio, performance.  As a special enhancement the collection has a handful of artist presets.

The Millennia NSEQ-2 parametric equalizer doesn’t quite have the legacy of the Pultecs but it has built a solid reputation in many top studios over the last two decades. One of its neatest tricks is to offer a switchable tube signal path and a solid-state JFET signal path, in each channel. Each channel has two set bands and two parametric bands.

The UA plug-in also adds a mid/side setting (along with a couple of other tweaks) not available on the hardware version.

Each retails at $299 (there is a $149 upgrade path for owners of the older Pultec Pro EQ plug-in). Sadly, both packages require either Universal Audio’s UAD-2 hardware accelerator card or the Apollo Interface.
