Radio Disney to Sell Most Radio Stations; Here's the List

Radio Disney says it’s selling most of its stations and focusing more on digital distribution — and away from broadcast.

The company plans to sell 23 out of its 24 stations, effective Sept. 26, according to officials; see the list at bottom. The one station its keeping, KDIS(AM), Los Angeles, will originate Radio Disney’s national programming. The national team will operate the facility.

The company will reduce its workforce, but hasn’t publicly disclosed the numbers other than to say some jobs will be eliminated, other positions will change and some new jobs will be added.

Radio Disney GM Phil Guerini told colleagues today that changing consumer media consumption habits “compel us to evaluate and evolve our business.”

Radio Disney will increase its involvement in digital distribution and music-centric programming; both “optimize the company for long-term growth and better reflect the habits of the customers we serve,” according to Guerini.

The company partners with digital radio services like SiriusXM and has new deals with ShowMobile, Slacker and Aha Radio. He also referenced Radio Disney’s app for iPhone, iPad and Android.

The company says it will explore new, digital extensions of Radio Disney programming.

Shawn: Clear channel stations are not treated as clear channel stations should be treated. They are now treated as regional stations by the FCC and that is part of the problem with MW (medium wave) radio. There are too many MW stations on the air on every channel because the FCC is run by those who don't understand radio or the geology and physics of this planet. The FCC seems to not understand that the ionosphere refracts MW band signals so they can be heard well beyond the horizon. When the FCC said "no new daytime only stations" they should have said "no new night time stations". This was the start of a bad image of MW radio. A transition to a new band is needed because many will not listen to MW because they think it is low quality and that bad image can not be changed.

Even if the stations are sold, the new owners may elect to license the Radio Disney feed from LA (which would probably be far cheaper than trying to create original programming or license a bunch of other shows). So for Bob, don't get your hopes up.... Besides, the 1560 frequency is a clear channel (not to be confused with the Clear Channel corp.) -- see http://www.fcc.gov/encyclopedia/am-broadcast-station-classes-clear-regional-and-local-channels and scroll to 1560. So it isn't going any place....

I doubt that any of the stations will keep the Radio Disney format. KMKI of Plano stopped transmitting their digital signal a couple of months ago. I believe that the new owners of most of the "AM" stations will put garbage on the stations and will cause the "AM" band to be considered more useless by listeners. My guess is that we will have more illegal alien oriented radio because of this sale.

Great news, less IBOC to pollute the AM airwaves. WQEW alone will clear up 30 kHz worth of noise up and down New England.

Great idea to sell them off. I doubt they ever had many listening anyway. I WILL be interested in looking at the selling prices of these stations. I never thought the concept was good in the first place.
