Registration has begun for the annual broadcast symposium of the IEEE Broadcast Technology Society.

This year’s event is Oct. 20–22 at the Westin Alexandria hotel in Alexandria, Va.

Keynote speakers include Jim Martin, director of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance programs for U.S. Department of Defense, who plans to discuss trends in defense information broadcasts; James O’Neal, technology editor of RW sister publication TV Technology who also writes about engineering history for Radio World, will talk about 100 years of transmitter evolution.

Wednesday begins with IBOC tutorials in emission mask compliance for FM HD stations from Greg Best Consulting, the design and use of the HD Radio coverage model from NPR Labs and IBOC signal frequency booster design and testing from iBiquity Digital.

Thursday radio engineering session topics include the slant wire shunt-fed monopole from Hatfield & Dawson, AM directional antenna patterns along with pattern inversion techniques by du Treil, Lundin & Rackley, and the Lindenblad antenna from Shively Labs. Transmission system solutions to increase IBOC power and coverage, by Harris Broadcast, and HD Radio data applications from the Broadcast Traffic Consortium round out the radio offerings.
