Remembering Edward Edison

Engineering industry colleagues are remembering Edward Edison, who co-founded the consulting firm Hammett & Edison more than 50 years ago.

He died last month at age 89. Bill Hammett of Hammett & Edison said Edward Edison died on a driving trip with his wife Lynn.

“Ed was an electrical engineering major from the University of Nebraska and began his career during World War II with RCA,” the company stated.

“He joined Robert L. Hammett in 1955 to form the firm of Hammett & Edison, Consulting Engineers, working for radio and television stations across the nation, along with municipal and other clients active in the communications field.”

Both men retired in 1988 and were honored with the Engineering Achievement Award from the National Association of Broadcasters in 1992. The firm is still located near San Francisco.

According to the company bio, “Ed was an enthusiast of Pierce-Arrow automobiles, and he loved to travel, making new friends wherever he went.”

He is survived by his wife Lynn and by his sons Greg and Doug and their families.

Dad was in Pearl Harbor and then on Midway with the Navy, though he was a contractor employed by RCA. During his time at Pearl, he pitched in with the repairs and resurection of the fleet, but was only there for about six weeks to the best of my knowledge. He then was flown to Midway in August, '42, I believe, where he spent a year+ installing and servicing SONAR and Radar systems, primarily on submarines. Another fellow employeed by Westinghouse for a similar duty was the only, other civilian on the atoll. Dad probably passed back through Oahu on this return to the mainland sometime in '43.
