Single-Chip Analog/Digital Radio Solution

Frontier Silicon has introduced Chorus 4, a single-chip digital radio solution that integrates RF front-end, baseband, application processor and DAC chips.

Chorus 4 is the fourth generation chip from Frontier Silicon. It is intended to advance digital radio around the world by supporting the major radio standards: AM, FM, DAB, DAB+, HD Radio and DRM. Chorus 4 also provides solutions for devices ranging from consumer radios, the automotive aftermarket, smartphones and tablets.

The chip can power one month’s listening for five to six hours a day on a portable radio using four D cell batteries.

It also includes Bluetooth connectivity, which enables hybrid radio (with interactivity and additional content delivered via IP), music streaming and remote control.

Its software also includes integrated service guides that list digital and analog offerings.

Chorus 4 solutions meet the technology requirements of the U.K. minimum specifications for both domestic and automotive digital radio devices to be considered.

“After 10 years of development on this and previous solutions, we now have our fourth generation chip – an integrated, single chip offering enhanced functionality, lower cost and significantly greater energy efficiency,” said Frontier Silicon CEO Anthony Sethill.

Radio has to come out of a smartphone or our youngsters will just not listen to it. If cellphone makers integrate Chorus-4 in their products DAB+ and DRM+ might gain a broader public acceptance. But listeners don't care about the transport mechanism (and Chorus-4 will enforce that). At the end the most costeffective and simplest solution will make it. And this will be FM and IP. Any other approach is wasting effort, money and time.

A second company with a great all mode, world radio chipset. It just doesn't get any better than that. To Scott's post, yes, AAC within DRM is pretty darn good; and the bitrate works quite well. Congratulations and Well Done to Frontier Silicon !!!!!

Scott, The problem with HD radio is the digital signal must be at a much lower power than the analog signal to prevent interference to the broadcaster's own signal and to other broadcasters on adjacent channels. Alan

This chip will allow the USA to solve its "AM" problem. DRM+ can be used at high or low power in the now vacant analog TV channels 1, 2 and 3 (47 - 68 MHz) as a simulcast but in surround or stereo sound, with graphics etc. DRM30 can be used in Arizona etc. DAB+ in cities for all major broadcasters in 215 - 230 MHz band.

While this is a great step forward, at the rate technology is changing anything that isn't a software-defined radio is almost guaranteed obsolescence in short order. While I haven't heard it myself, others whose opinions I trust have and say HE-AAC in DRM already sounds better than our HD system.
