Visual Radio for European Championships

The European Broadcasting Union and European Athletics are premiering a “visual radio” signal as part of their coverage of the Zurich 2014 European Athletics Championships, held August 12–17, according to the EBU website.

The Visual radio project consists of a live data slideshow showing results and event photos. Swiss Timing and Getty Images provided the timing results and images, respectively. Available via the Eurovision Sports Live app, the solution also has an English audio component.

The slideshow can be delivered via various platforms including DAB+ slideshow, hybrid Radio (RadioVIS/RadioDNS) and/or the Web. Using the DAB+ slideshow, images are broadcast alongside the radio program and displayed on DAB+ digital radios with color screens.

Hybrid radio receivers automatically download and display images as they are produced.
