Love ‘Em or Hate ‘Em, It’s the ‘Cool Stuff’ Awards

Let the second-guessing begin!

We made our big announcement of the annual Radio World “Cool Stuff” Award winners. It’s a traditional part of the send-off day at the NAB Show, and a sure-fire way to rouse the industry’s equipment suppliers into celebrations … or second-guessing.

The list of this year’s winners is heavy on codecs — which continue to grow more powerful, even as they become more cost-effective and reliable for mission-critical applications — and IP audio routing infrastructures. But the list also includes products as wide-ranging as a portable solar power station, a “paperless studio” and a nifty new kind of on-air light.

Winners are picked by a panel of broadcast engineering judges, who spend a great deal of time under a lot of pressure to make the best and wisest choices. I think they do a great job (though I’m the one who takes the heat for their selections, because the panel, which rotates every year, remains anonymous and probably isn’t who you think it is). We’ll tell you much more about these products in detail in an upcoming issue.

What were your favorite new products at the show? Tell me here or via e-mail to [email protected].
