Free Is Good

Sometimes free stuff is worth more than what you paid for it

The most recent Off the Beaten Path was a collection of links to old time radio. If you are into that history (as most radio people are), there are some fine video links of promotional radio. This time we have free stuff … from public domain content to information. It includes some sites which should be in your Web browser’s bookmarks. If you like what these folks have to give to you, I’d suggest shooting them a “thank you” email. Certainly a lot of work has gone into these great resources!

Pond5
Often broadcasters need some audio, video or a picture but want to be legal about using it. I stumbled across this Website, Pond5, where you can download free stuff. You must register, however. It starts with their introduction video.

Star City Radio Tools
This is an awesome collection of manuals, technical information and some pics and should be in your browser’s shortcuts. I’m always amazed at the “labor of love” some people put into radio and helping others in need of information. Dale H. Cook deserves a world of thanks for his contribution.

Tower Search Engine
See a tower and want to know more information about it? Or just doing some research on finding a location on a tower for your antennas? Here’s a free search engine for towers.

Broadcast Technical Reference
The Broadcasters’ Desktop Resource is also another “must be in your shortcuts” link. Again, another amazing collection of great broadcast information.

And finally …
Marvin Gaye had a big hit with “Sexual Healing.” Here’s the barbershop quintet version by “The Ragtime Girls” (of which none are girls).

If you stumble across a good or unusual web site that might be of interest, please don’t hesitate to send me the link and any info you might have about it. My email address is [email protected].
