Cris Plays With His Quadcopter

Two nifty videos using a drone

Lots of readers loved our recent stories about UAVs and their uses in radio.

Our own contributor Cris Alexander shares two videos that he shot with his quadcopter while waiting on colleagues to finish work on an engineering project.

The first shows a spring flood of the South Platte River threatening a transmitter site for KLVZ(AM) in Brighton, Colo., surrounding the site with water. The second shows workers painting the towers at the same site.

These were noncommercial and done for his own enjoyment. Cris writes that the setup was a DJI Phantom 2 quadcopter, Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal, GoPro Hero3 Silver camera and first-person view, “so I can see what I’m shooting in real time.”

The towers are about 300 feet tall; Cris didn’t bust the FAA’s 500-foot limit. He has the Phantom programmed with a max height of 400 feet AGL.
