Return to Radio

Dan returns to his roots

With the last edition of Off the Beaten Path we took a trip to Hollywood. This time we’ll go back to a more radio-focused edition.

International Radio Heritage
If you’re a diehard radio fan … maybe a DXer of distant signals, you’ll enjoy this link. Radio Heritage is a website that includes radio stations from all over the globe. It’s interesting to see how our industry can vary from studios to technology around the world from the past to the present.

Museum of Broadcast Communications
Every now and then I include a “rerun” of a great link. The Museum of Broadcast Communications is an excellent resource for researching or watching many old TV shows. You could get lost in this web site for hours! After registering (it’s free) look in the Digital Archives.

WLS History
The well-known Chicago station is now 56 years old, but back in 2010 this website celebrated the iconic station’s 50th anniversary. Though now getting closer to 60 years old, the history of WLS, including some incredible old audio files, is still captivating! If you love radio (and who amongst us doesn’t?) you’ll love this link.

Border Blasters
DXers and radio listeners from the Southwest U.S. are familiar with “border blasters.” Back in the “good old days of radio,” some Mexican radio stations near the U.S. border “cranked it up” (their power) to extend their coverage further into the United States. One easily recognized DJ from these border blasters was Wolfman Jack. Here’s a link to more information about these stations. Be sure to backtrack to the index of this website as they have a lot of great radio info, history, and stories related to radio broadcasting in California!

And finally …
Just for fun … here are 28 things that kids today will never understand.

If you stumble across a good or unusual web site that might be of interest, please don’t hesitate to send me the link and any info you might have about it. My email address is [email protected].
