Tech Help

Dan drums up tech help

Every now and then I find additional tech links that can be really helpful. People sometimes send me links to sites they’ve made or found. This week we’ll look at a few sites and links that provide some possible tech help for you whether it’s buying stuff or knowing how to do something. We start with “a best kept secret.”

TechSoup
If you work for a nonprofit 501(c)(3), you know that there are some good companies and people out there willing to lend a hand to nonprofits — whether it’s an “education rate” or some special deal. This is TechSoup, a consolidation of available resources for nonprofits. I consider TechSoup a “best kept secret.”

Recording Drums
If you are a recording engineer, or just a “sound guy,” you’ll like this. It’s a fascinating video on how VERY different the audio can sound using the same drum kit, same mics, same everything except the studio itself. It’s the difference the studio makes to the acoustics. Keep in mind that this can apply equally to about everything we do in radio and audio.

Longley-Rice Coverage Maps
A little help for determining radio coverage. Here’s a Canadian link. And Nautel provides an excellent resource through their NUG link on this page (you sign up but they won’t pester you).

FTPing
If you aren’t familiar with FileZilla, let me introduce you. It’s a free FTP solution which you might find helpful for your file transfer needs.

Capacitor Charge Calculator
If you’re a fan of Ohm’s Law (and who among us isn’t?), here’s an online calculator which might be of help when you’re working with caps.

Help for VERY Bad Engineers
I had to include this link (just for fun).

And finally …
Here’s an awesome cartoon called “The Wishgranter.” It’s only five minutes long and beautifully animated. Most importantly, it has a wonderful storyline.

If you stumble across a good or unusual web site that might be of interest, please don’t hesitate to send me the link and any info you might have about it. My email address is [email protected].
