Capturing Lightning on a Screen

Dan solves your internet woes and entertains too

This edition of Off the Beaten Path is particularly scattered with odd, different, or just fun links, especially if you like computers and the internet.

Lightning Map
This is just one of those things I find interesting. It’s a worldwide “live” lightning map. Note that you can choose North America (or specify continents) and then zoom through countries or states by selecting them on the left.

Using a TRS-80 Today!
You have to love creativity! This link shows how someone modified an old Radio Shack TRS-80 to work on today’s internet. Really! Can’t say the graphics are good (or even exist), but it’s dang clever!

Internet Woes?
From the “How to Geek” website comes some useful tips on fixing poor internet connections. My own thing to improve surf speed is CCleaner (a free favorite). Of course, if you have a lame provider, there aren’t many ways to get past a poor service provider (sorry).

Streaming Radio
There are a lot of places to find streaming radio station (or streaming stations without the “radio” part). Here’s one.

Five Seconds of Fun
If you love old radio, here’s five seconds of good, old-fashioned fun!

And finally …
Most engineers have opened up equipment to find some “questionable work” … but this tablet computer is possibly the worst ever.

If you stumble across a good or unusual web site that might be of interest, please don’t hesitate to send me the link and any info you might have about it. My email address is [email protected].
