Speaking to the Digital Media Summit in Toronto, Shapiro tweeted a photo of Emmis Chair/President/CEO Jeff Smulyan demoing the NextRadio app for Jacobs Media President Fred Jacobs.

His tweet read: “At @CMW_week w/ @fnjacobs. Ran into Emmis Chair Jeff Smulyan who demoed cool radio smartphone tech used by @Sprint. pic.twitter.com/L0YSvfh15j.”

Jacobs characterized Shapiro’s comments about the app as “a shoutout for innovation” and a somewhat “reversal of position.”

He’s referring to CEA’s earlier stance on FM chips in smartphones, however that opposition that was in response to NAB’s earlier calls for a mandate. CEA has advocated letting the marketplace determine the fate of FM chip activation in cellphones.
