More details are coming out concerning the FCC’s upcoming field hearings on how communication networks perform during a natural disaster or other crisis.
Inoperable or damaged cell networks during and post-superstorm Sandy prompted the hearings. The first will look at “the resiliency of communications networks” by focusing on that disaster, according to the commission. The material learned at the hearings will help the agency craft recommendations and actions to strengthen wired and wireless networks in the face of such large-scale emergencies.
The first hearing will take place Feb. 5 in New York City and Hoboken, N.J. The morning session is slated for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Customs House. The afternoon session, from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. moves to the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J.
The hearings will also be streamed over the FCC’s website.
No details have been released about additional hearings.
