The Copyright Royalty Board has released the newest rates for the period from January 2013–January 2017.
For the first time, radio stations linked to educational institutions (excluding NPR and PBS affiliates) will have their rates adjusted according to two factors: the size of the full-time student population and the station’s effective radiated power. The fees will increase annually.
Stations with an ERP of 100 W or less will not have their population size considered in the rate calculation, and they will be charged the lowest fee. For institutions operating with higher ERP and having a student body of less than 1,000 students, 2013 rates begin at $319, rising to $345 by 2017. Those with 1,000–4,999 students start at $369 and increase to $399. The 5,000 to 9,999 range will begin at $505 and end at $546. Institutions of higher learning with 10,000 to 19,999 students will be charged $655 in 2013 and $708 in 2017. Finally, those with 20,000 or more will begin at $822, rising annually until the 2017 rate of $890.
It should be noted that the fees do not include Web streaming.
