Internet: Here Comes ‘Dot-Radio’

If approved, will mark new era in radio web properties

Media e-commerce firm and online property holder BRS Media Inc. has applied for the .radio top-level domain (TLD) with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.

ICANN’s board of directors previously approved the expansion of the number of TLDs, to the concern and outrage of some governing bodies and industry heads. Common generic TLDs include .com and .net, while country code TLDs include .uk, .us and many others. TLDs and are used to designate the website’s purpose as commercial, nonprofit or as country or territory.

There are several reasons for the expansion of prospective domains, ranging from simple supply & demand problems to improved security and increased commercial opportunities. Instructive explanations can be found here and here.

If approved, BRS would have the rights to administer and manage any website domain names with the .radio root. For perspective, if you’ve ever dreamed of owning the rights to radio.com, imagine the possibilities for a website with the address tunein.radio, listento.radio or (call sign).radio.

“We look forward to moving ahead into the next phase of .radio,” said George T. Bundy, BRS Media Inc. chairman and CEO, in a press release. “We are ecstatic and thrilled to have the opportunity to establish a new top-level domain, and envision great possibilities in creativity and innovation in the .radio namespace.”

The company has announced plans to work with Internet registry services provider Minds & Machines, who has previously served the .FM country code TLD, belonging to the Federated States of Micronesia.

BRS Media will give a presentation on their plans for .radio as well as the existing industry-specific domains on April 15 in Las Vegas at the RAIN Summit West 2012 Conference. The Internet Radio Summit is collocated with the upcoming NAB Show in Las Vegas.
