New EBU Director of Technology and Innovation

Simon Fell replaces Lieven Vermaele at European Broadcasting Union

The European Broadcasting Union has tapped Simon Fell as its new director of technology and innovation, beginning August 15. He replaces Lieven Vermaele, who served for six years.

Fell has more than three decades’ experience in senior broadcasting technology roles, including at British broadcaster ITV, where he was director of future technologies and controller of emerging technologies.

He has also worked for Carlton Television, the ITV franchise holder for the London area, holding several executive roles linked to operations and emerging technologies.

He is the current chairman of the Technical Council at the Digital Television Group, and he has previously served on the EBU’s Technical Committee on behalf of U.K. broadcasters.

Fell will be responsible for driving media innovation and integration, setting standards and defining and sharing best practices in media production and delivery. He will also drive business development.

“Public service media companies throughout Europe face a changing technological landscape now more than ever,” Fell said. “I am looking forward to leading the EBU’s great technology team as we navigate the future and guide the membership towards the right technology choices for digital media production and delivery.”
