Noncommercial FMs Grow

FCC’s official station count shows commercial AMs, FMs flat, while translators, LPFMs dropped

The number of licensed noncommercial FM stations is growing.

The FCC’s latest count puts that figure at 3,917 as of the end of March, compared to 3,860 at the end of 2012.

The amount of commercial FMs is relatively flat at 6,603 such licensees, compared to 6,598 in the previous quarter.

During sessions at the NAB Show, attendees heard of licenses being turned in, however the bulk of that action may have occurred before the latest FCC station count was completed. As of the end of 2012, there were 4,738 licensed AM stations, compared to 4,736 at the end of the first quarter of this year, according to the commission.

There’s a drop in the number of FM translators and boosters, some 6,053 licensees at the end of March compared to 6,075 at the end of the previous quarter.

The number of LPFMs dropped, from 809 at the end of 2012 to 802 at the end of the first quarter.
