Pai to Highlight AM Revitalization at NAB Show

Commissioner to lead panel on the topic in Vegas

FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai is moderating a panel at the upcoming NAB Show on AM revitalization.

Readers will recall at the Radio Show last fall, Pai proposed that the commission concentrate on efforts to help AM owners, including removing FCC rules that act as roadblocks to technical efforts that could help struggling AMs, for example.

While FCC commissioners often participate in such panels, it’s unusual for a commissioner to moderate one. Pai reportedly approached NAB about it.

The Monday, April 8 panel “will address possible options for sustaining and enhancing AM radio as a unique entertainment medium,” according to the broadcast lobby.

The panel is expected to include AM radio leaders, engineers and policy experts.

Pai came to the commission in May 2012. Between 2007 and 2011, he held several positions in the FCC’s Office of General Counsel, including deputy general counsel. Prior to joining the FCC, he was a partner in the communications practice at Jenner & Block and associate general counsel at Verizon Communications.
