RadioFlag Turns One

Points to success and new apps to come

RadioFlag, a social media/marketing website devoted to college radio, recently marked the one year anniversary since its launch with an announcement to fans and supporters on its progress.

RadioFlag launched in southern California in April of last year, arriving on the national stage on October 11. It received a boost to its popularity when it was chosen as the Official Radio App during the first ever College Radio Day, and has since been adopted by approximately 500 DJ contributors, according to press release figures.

The company points to a number of college radio stations joining the RadioFlag social media umbrella. Stations ranging from Hawaii to Alaska to South Carolina have signed up.

RadioFlag says that it has worked to gain acceptance from the radio market, while also developing apps for broadcasters to better utilize the power of social media in radio. The idea behind their “live content search engine” (as described in a recent Radio World profile) is to connect audiences with the music they want to hear.

It has apps for iPhone and Android now and plans on releasing platforms for the BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 for users, as well as “Showcast,” the modified version of the RadioFlagDJ app made exclusively for DJs. The future will also see the release of “Notifications,” an app that notifies users when their music picks (flags) have been commented on, or when their user profiles have been mentioned.

Monetization models are also in the works, including music sales, targeted advertising and business to business paid services. Plans for 2012 include a crowdsourcing model.

RadioFlag also reports they have outgrown their current headquarters, and plan on moving to a new, larger location in a near future.
