WHHS to Receive Donation from Rudmans

Donation will provide equipment to student radio station

The Kal and Lucille Rudman Foundation will present a $10,000 donation for new equipment to the Haverford High School’s student radio station, WHHS 99.9(FM), on Feb. 20 at 1 p.m. at the WHHS Studio in Havertown, Pa.

In honor of the donation, the studio will be renamed the Kal and Lucille Rudman Studio. The Philadelphia-native-turned-radio-industry-legend and his wife will tour the studio and discuss radio training with Haverford students.

The donation will strengthen the station’s ability to comply with FCC requirements to renew its license.

“I consider a communications teaching program to be the same as any other vocational program,” said Rudman. “The ability to start at the high school level, including engineering, programming and administration, has enabled students at Haverford since the late 1940s to have a big edge in obtaining professional careers, both locally and around the United States.”

As a former high school teacher and broadcast radio DJ (starting at age 15), Rudman has put his money where his mouth is by supporting radio education opportunities for students in the region. Rudman, a former Billboard R&B editor, has also founded six radio and music industry publications, including the “Friday Morning Quarterback.”

WHHS was one of the first high school FM radio stations in the United States, qualifying it as one of the oldest currently broadcasting. In 1949, the then principal secured a frequency from the FCC for an experiment in radio electronics, and with the assistance of a physics and chemistry teacher, the station was on the air.

Students working at the station produce and DJ live music, news, sports and current events shows, after learning about the federal regulations that govern the station, use of equipment and how to organize air time. WHHS alumni now work for radio stations including Philadelphia’s WMGK(FM), WYSP(FM) in Scranton, WXPN(FM) in Philadelphia.
