ZBC Directors Question VOZ Mess

Voice of Zimbabwe still off air due to transmission issues

The directors of Gweru-Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corp. (ZBC) recently expressed dismay at state-run national signal carrier Transmedia’s inability to solve transmission problems that have kept the Voice of Zimbabwe shortwave station in central Zimbabwe off the air since October.

During a tour of the country’s broadcasting facilities, the ZBC directors said they were “shocked to note dilapidation and neglect of VOZ,” which was established to counteract alternative shortwave radio stations such as Radio Voice of the People, VOA Studio 7 and SW Radio Africa.

The government has traditionally castigated shortwave stations in the country, claiming they work against the land redistribution of 2000, which displaced many white commercial farmers of British origin.
