EBU: Collaboration Key in Move to Digital Radio

Annual report indicates that stakeholders need to work together to ensure successful transition

The importance of teamwork stretches to the implementation of digital radio, according to the EBU’s Media Intelligence Service (MIS).

The organization’s annual update on digital radio advances in Europe suggests that stakeholders working together is the better indicator for success when making the move to digital radio. MIS points directly to Norway as an example of this, which recently became the first European country to begin switching off its FM signal.

On the flip side, the report indicates that progress toward digital radio has slowed in markets like the Czech Republic and Poland where stakeholders have not been able to reach a consensus on the specifics of a digital radio rollout.

“Our statistics show the complementary between commercial and public broadcasters’ digital offerings,” said Dr. David Fernandez Quijada, MIS senior media analyst. “It’s important for the growth of digital radio that broadcasters not only simulcast existing analog services, but also add value by offering something new as well.”

Additional elements of the report include upcoming trends and a complete picture of digital radio across Europe.
