Over Half of UK Cars Sold Now Sport Digital Radio

Report says April 2014 car data is best in a decade

Digital Radio UK says 55 percent of new cars now come equipped with digital radio as standard in April 2014, according to CAP/SMMT, up from 37.2 percent in April 2013 — and just 3.6 percent in April 2010.

According to The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, March 2014 saw 464,824 new car registrations, the highest in a decade. So far this year, approximately 440,000 of these vehicles have been sold with digital radio.

The new data shows that vehicle manufacturers like Vauxhall and Mercedes have made increases to 60 percent of their range with digital radio as standard, while the German brands BMW (100 percent), VW (89 percent) and Audi (88 percent) have made progress across the range. Ford now fits 77 percent of new models with digital radio as standard.

Many car dealers and car radio retailers can also convert existing cars to digital.

“This latest rise in digital radio uptake is a welcome endorsement of consumer appetite for the next generation of audio technology and follows major investment committed to this new technology by vehicle manufacturers,” said Mike Hawes, chief executive of SMMT.
