Sweden Hears First DRM+ Broadcasts

Trial will run at least six months

Digital Radio Sweden broadcast its first on-air DRM+ test transmissions in the Stockholm area on Feb. 24.

The trial, which is initially scheduled to last for six months, is run with a DRM+ transmitter on the 97.0 MHz FM band with a power of 500 W. The testing is being made in consultation with the Post- and Telecom Authority of Sweden. This first phase will create the basis for an initial technical evaluation, while the second will result in a more detailed evaluation.

DRS aims to present alternative or complementary technologies to DAB in addition to promoting general awareness of digital radio.

The group also emphasizes its belief that “it is important to efficiently utilize the limited resources of the frequency spectrum.”
