Gage Challenges Broadcasters to Be Flexible

NAB’s tech executive also seeks more participation in ATSC, NRSC

NAB EVP/CTO Kevin Gage challenged broadcasters to be flexible and nimble in order to keep up with fast-paced technological change.

That evolution is changing how consumers consume media, he said during the opening of the Broadcast Engineering Conference for the NAB Show.

“Did we anticipate that our viewers and listeners would become broadcast professionals, posting their own media? How can we ensure our industry doesn’t get left in the dust?” Gage asked rhetorically.

Broadcast technology teams need to be prepared, increasing speed to market with agile development, according to the NAB’s tech executive, noting that standard-setting times are being compressed in the consumer electronics world, which affects broadcast.

“We need to offer consumers what they want, where they want it, when they want it,” said Gage. “Being flexible will keep us moving forward.”

He asked for more broadcasters to become involved in the standards-setting efforts of the ATSC and the NRSC.
