While the day-two morning sessions of the IEEE Broadcast Technology Society’s focused heavily on the developing “next-gen” U.S. television broadcast standard (ASTC 3.0), the afternoon program quickly shifted to new audio technologies, delivery of content via IP, and a “deep plunge” into the relatively new AES67 audio-over-IP interoperability standard.
The special forum featured industry gurus Phil Owens (Wheatstone), Al Salci (SAS), Keyur Parikh (GatesAir) and Greg Shay (The Telos Alliance), with each player bringing conference attendees up to date on the uses, benefits and implementation of AES67. After the individual presentations, the foursome gathered on stage for a panel discussion of the interoperability standard, fielding questions from the audience.
Despite all the heavy-hitting audio and video presentations, for the second day in a row it was the noontime keynote speaker who turned heads and riveted the attention of the attendees. NASA manager and space program evangelist Jon Cowart wowed the combined IEEE BTS and AFCCE luncheon crowd with tales of his up-close and personal dealings with U.S. astronauts, some of the space program’s history, a description of the challenges involved in going to Mars and beyond, and the next chapter of the space program which will feature private sector players Boeing and Space-X (Cowart is long time NASA employee and will serve as mission manager for the first Space-X manned flight).
