BBG Networks Offer Civil Rights-Themed Programming

Wednesday programming to focus on march and King

As world leaders, celebrities and thousands of visitors arrive in Washington on Wednesday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, the United States’ international broadcasting arms, will offer special programming to mark the occasion.

Throughout the day, outlets like Voice of America to Radio and TV Marti will feature live reports from the scene on the Mall, topical stories about human rights and civil disobedience in the United States and abroad and interviews with key figures in the U.S. civil rights movement.

“Dr. King’s message of acceptance and his strategies for bringing social and political change have ongoing relevance,” said Dick Lobo, director of the International Broadcasting Bureau, in a statement.

Select highlights include on Voice of America: “The King Legacy, Marching Forward,” narrated by U.S. Rep. John Lewis; and “Straight Talk Africa,” featuring host Shaka Ssali, about the impact of the 1963 March on human rights in Africa and around the world.

On Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty there will be excerpts from Dr. King’s speech and VOA interviews with veteran U.S. activists about the March on Washington and the continued relevance of the civil rights movement today.

For audiences of Middle East-focused Alhurra TV and Radio Sawa will have access to comprehensive coverage in Arabic, including live translation of key events in Washington. Alhurra’s “Eye on Democracy” will focus on nonviolent civil disobedience and how it affected change in the U.S. The Rev. Jesse Jackson will appear on Alhurra’s “Al Youm” to discuss Dr. King’s teachings, his legacy and the impact he had on the world.

And Radio and TV Marti will use the occasion to examine race relations in Cuba. Fellow human rights activist and member of the Committee for Racial Integration, Leonardo Calvo, who recently returned from the United States, will participate in commemorative celebrations at the U.S. Interest Section in Havana.
