General Motors is betting big on Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The automaker says it plans to offer compatibility with both brands of smartphone controller software in 14 of its 2016 Chevrolet models — more than any automotive brand, it says.
The first of the models is the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze compact, which will be available on June 24. GM says the Cruze is its best-selling passenger car, with 3+ million on the road to-date.
Customers are demanding better integration between phones and their vehicles, according to GM, which like other automakers, plans to offer both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay so drivers have more options. That’s especially important when more than one driver will use the car, we’ve reported.
Drivers can access Android Auto and Apple CarPlay through Chevy’s 7-inch MyLink infotainment system on seven 2016 models: Spark, Cruze, Malibu, Camaro, Camaro Convertible, Silverado and Silverado HD.
The 8-inch version will be compatible with Apple CarPlay only, initially, at the beginning on the 2016 model year. GM says “development and testing is not yet complete,” however Android Auto compatibility may be available on the 8-inch MyLink later in the 2016 model year. The 8-inch MyLink models are: Cruze, Malibu, Impala, Volt, Camaro, Camaro Convertible, Corvette, Corvette Convertible, Colorado, Silverado, Silverado HD, Tahoe and Suburban.
Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay allow drivers to make and receive calls, texts and email messages with voice commands using a steering wheel button or via touchscreen. To use in one of the compatible 2016 Chevrolet models, a “Projection” icon on the MyLink screen is visible when a phone is not connected, then changes to indicate either CarPlay or Android Auto when the driver connects a compatible phone via USB.
Android Auto requires a phone running the Android Lollipop 5.0 operating system or above, while Apple CarPlay requires an iPhone 5 or later.
GM also plans to sell the Chevy models in Brazil, Mexico and Canada.
