When high school radio stations across the country come together on May 16, for the first-ever High School Radio Day, it will be in the effort to raise awareness about the effect of school district budget cuts on high school students’ opportunities in radio, according to event planners.
Only an estimated 200 high schools in the United States have terrestrial over-the-air — or Internet-only — radio station, according to High School Radio Day founder Pete Bowers, station manager of WBFH(FM) in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
Following on the heels of College Radio Day, held last October, there will be an open video call where stations can communicate with one another, sharing technical expertise, fundraising, programming and promotional ideas.
According to Bowers, he decided to set the day in May in honor of the first U.S. high school radio station, WNAS, which went on the air in May, 1949, in New Albany, Ind.
