Last AM Revitalization Translator Window Opened This Week

It remains open through 5:59 pm Eastern on Jan. 31

Looking to apply for a new translator? The last window opened Jan. 24.

Just after midnight Eastern time Wednesday morning, the Federal Communications Commission opened a final window for Class A and B AM stations (plus qualifying Class C and D AM stations) who are looking to apply for a new cross-service FM translator.

The window won’t be open long: It closes at 5:59 pm Eastern time (note the time — it’s not the typical stroke-of-midnight deadline) on Wednesday, Jan. 31.

This final window is the last of the Auction 100 filing windows designed to help revitalize the AM band as part of the commission’s AM Revitalization initiative. Full details on the processes and procedures are in the FCC’s Public Notice, which includes detailed filing instructions and a link to an online tutorial.

Keep in mind that those who already applied for a translator in either of the 2016 windows for existing translators or in 2017 for a new translator are unable to participate in this auction window.

Also, at this same time, the FCC has put a temporary freeze on accepting certain applications — including FM translator minor change applications, LPFM minor change applications or FM booster construction permit applications. That freeze is in place until the window closes Jan. 31. Any such applications submitted during the window will be dismissed by the Media Bureau, the FCC said.

As in past windows, any FM translator proposals that end up being mutually exclusive will either be resolved through a future settlement opportunity, technical amendment or through competitive bidding.
