MIW Group Names 2017 Airblazer Award Winner

Previous winners include Ellen K and Angie Martinez

The Mentoring and Inspiring Women in Radio Group has named its 2017 MIW Airblazer.

Roula Christie of Cumulus Houston’s KRBE(FM) will be recognized for her role as host of the “Roula and Ryan Show” during the 29th Annual Morning Show Boot Camp’s Women’s Forum session, Aug. 3 in Atlanta. Hubbard Radio Chair and CEO Ginny Morris will present the award.

The Airblazer Award debuted in 2015 and is the brainchild of the MIW Radio Group and Talentmaster’s Morning Show Boot Camp. Previous winners include Ellen K and Angie Martinez.

Christie began her radio career answering KRBE(FM) request lines, a job she got after she responded to DJ Paul “Cubby” Bryant’s request for food delivery. She took the initiative of offering food from her family’s restaurant, Christie’s Seafood & Steaks, and she was invited to sit in on the DJ’s shift, which got her foot in the door.

She was still in college at the time and transitioned to on-air talent role two years later. After five years on air, Christie moved to Philadelphia in 2000 for a morning show job with WIOQ(FM). In 2003, she returned to Houston to work for a competitor, and in 2006, “The Roula and Ryan Show” debuted.

“Roula is a consummate MIW Airblazer,” MIW Group Spokeswoman Denyse Mesnik said in the announcement. “She professionally navigates responsibilities that are unique to a morning show, while contributing to her hometown community and, most importantly as a working mom, raising three young children. We look for leadership and a selfless understanding of giving back in our Airblazer honoree. Roula leads by example and serves as a reminder to Houston listeners, and frankly to all of us in radio, that the true power behind a radio microphone lies in establishing genuine emotional connections with the people and communities we serve.”

The MIW in Radio Group consists of female media pros advocating for the advancement of women in the industry and helping others develop management and leadership skills.
