Margaret Low Smith, senior vice president of NPR News, announced that NPR has named two new editors to its leadership team.
Madhulika Sikka, current executive producer of “Morning Edition,” public radio’s largest news program, will become executive editor in January. She will oversee all desks, in addition to the news division’s agenda.
Sikka has been with “Morning Edition” for six years. According to a release NPR says that under her leadership, the newsmagazine has traveled widely and forged partnerships across NPR on-air and online. Sikka also led a combined effort with NPR Music and NPR Books to create multimedia stories.
She is the recipient of four Emmys, two duPont awards, a Barone award, two Peabodys, three SAJA Awards, and an NABJ Award. Her resume also includes work as a senior producer for ABC News’ “Nightline.”
Neal Carruth will serve as senior business editor beginning in December. Since August 2011, Carruth has been running NPR’s election coverage, ranging from campaign and issues reporting, and live, special coverage of the primaries, caucuses, conventions and debates. He also established segments “Parallel Lives,” about how the candidates’ lives coincide, and “Solve This,” exploring issues facing the next president. In his new role, Carruth will work closely with NPR’s Planet Money team.
Carruth began as an NPR intern in 1999 and has been with the organization since that time. He has worked on most NPR news programs and was a producer in the Baghdad bureau in 2006. He has previously worked as the supervising senior producer of “All Things Considered.”
