Radio/TV Martí Release Phone App

Office of Cuba Broadcasting says its mobile site traffic has grown significantly in past year

Leaders of U.S. international broadcasting have said they want to make more and better use of new media platforms. Here is one such effort, intended for people in Cuba, which according to the independent watchdog Freedom House has the least free press in the Americas.

The Office of Cuba Broadcasting has released a smartphone application that will be available for iPhone and Android mobiles and tablets, features news alerts, video and audio on demand, sharing of photos and text, and the ability to download and store content, according to a release.

According to Will Sullivan, mobile product lead for Broadcasting Board of Governors’ Office of Digital Design and Innovation, mobile use is on the rise in Cuba.

“Our mobile site traffic has grown 1,400 percent since this time last year,” Office of Cuba Broadcasting Director Carlos García-Pérez said in a statement.

The free app, the organization says, will come in handy not for just bringing information in, but getting it out. “Access to the Internet in Cuba via landlines or Wi-Fi is extremely restricted, but more than 2 million people on the island own cellphones,” Sullivan said.
