RTDNA Names 2014 Hogan Award Winner

CBS Radio’s Harvey Nagler recognized for contributions to journalism

The Radio Television Digital News Association has announced the winner of the 2014 John F. Hogan Distinguished Service Award — longtime CBS Radio News Vice President Harvey Nagler.

“The format and sound of today’s radio newscasts owe a lot to Harvey Nagler,” said Chris Carl, chairman of RTDNA. “The many awards and accolades earned by CBS Radio News are proof that he stands for innovation and integrity.”

Nagler was named vice president of CBS Radio News in January 1998. He is responsible for CBS Radio News operations worldwide, including news gathering and programming and its relationship with its thousands of affiliated stations around the country. Nagler had served as general manager of CBS Radio News from 1997–98.

The network has won national and international awards during his tenure, including RTDNA’s Edward R. Murrow Overall Excellence Award for seven years in a row. In March 2010, Nagler was honored with the RTNDF’s First Amendment Service Award.

Prior to joining CBS Radio News, Nagler was director of news and programming for WCBS(AM) Newsradio 88 (1987–97).

The award recognizes an individual’s contributions to the journalism profession and freedom of the press and will be presented on Sept. 5, at the Excellence in Journalism 2014 national convention, at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville, Tenn. The ceremony will be followed by a reception.

Past recipients include Jorge Ramos, Christopher Glenn, Don Fitzpatrick, Hugh Downs, Walter Cronkite, Terry Anderson, Rob Downey, Col. Barney Oldfield, David Sarnoff and Frank Stanton.
