SLAM Launches Student-Run National Radio Channel

24/7/365 SLAM Radio will air on SiriusXM radio

Student-run radio stations have been around for decades. In many instances, they serve as an extracurricular activity, in others, they function as the hands-on component of an academic program. But now, the Sports Leadership Arts and Management (SLAM) charter school network is set to take campus media to the next level when it launches SLAM Radio, a 24/7/365 student run channel that will air on SiriusXM radio.

The Miami-based charter school will launch this innovative educational-professional model as a pilot program with an emphasis on sports, entertainment and journalism. SLAM Radio will be aligned with the school’s mission of providing students with an introduction to the sports media industry as part of its college-preparatory mission.

The work began this fall, with the creation of a year-long preproduction timeline encompassing educational, technical and financial responsibilities. While the launch of the channel is slated for fall 2018, the preproduction schedule includes integrating a new course focused on professional standards into the school’s existing multimedia production curriculum. The course enables students to earn both high school and college credit. Other work included planning for a capital campaign to raise funds for new production facilities at other SLAM campuses across the country.

SLAM Academies are tuition-free public college preparatory charter schools serving students who seek careers in the sports leadership and management industries. SLAM integrates sports-related themes into a rigorous curricular program to engage students in the learning process by leveraging their love for sports and making learning meaningful and relevant.
