KLAC raises money for paralyzed vets; WEEI recognized for Jimmy Fund work

While Sandy catches much of the attention when it comes to radio fundraising efforts these days, other causes remain the beneficiaries of radio efforts.

In L.A. Fox Sports radio’s KLAC(AM) raised $135,000 during its fifth “Help A Hero” radiothon. Proceeds go to the Paralyzed Veterans of America. The annual event took place on Nov. 8 for seven hours. Fox Sports Radio personalities Steve Hartman, Vic Jacobs, Petros Papadakis and Rob Dibble hosted.

On hand manning the phones and helping on air were local sports legends former Dodgers Manager Tommy Lasorda and Lakers star James Worthy. Additional figures included UFC President Dana White, former boxer Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini and former hockey player now L.A. Kings President Luc Robitaille. Former fitness model and TV personality Leeann Tweeden and singer Eddie Money helped out.

On the opposite coast, Entercom Boston’s WEEI(FM) was given the 2012 Global Living Cancer Coalition Journalism Award for its efforts during the recent Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon, Aug. 21–22. The award is given by the Global Lung Cancer Coalition.
