West Yorkshire Adds DAB Coverage

New transmitter tower doubles listening area

Barry Sheerman, MP for Huddersfield, switched on a new DAB digital radio transmitter at Emley Moor. This will provide local DAB digital radio stations to 500,000 people in West Yorkshire and improve the signal for others in the area.

Arqiva’s transmitter tower is 330 meters tall, the tallest freestanding structure in the United Kingdom and a Grade II listed building, says Digital Radio UK.

The new DAB digital radio transmitter will enable listeners to hear BBC Radio Leeds, Radio Aire, Absolute Classic Rock, Absolute Radio 60s, The Hits, Magic, Kerrang! and Heat on DAB digital radio for the first time. The tower will expand local DAB coverage from 53 to 96 percent, after digital listeners retune their radio sets.

The switch-on was marked by collaboration between public and commercial broadcaster.

In West Yorkshire, 39 percent of homes already own a DAB digital radio, and local road coverage will also be improved, adding hundreds of miles of roads. Listeners can check which stations they can now receive at getdigitalradio.com.

Digital radio coverage in the U.K. is currently 94 percent for BBC’s national stations, 85 percent for national commercial stations, and 66 percent for local DAB coverage.
