WorldDAB Automotive 2017 Meets in Munich

Automakers and broadcasters put focus on adoption of DAB radio in cars

During the WorldDAB Automotive 2017 event, which took place today in Munich, speakers from automotive manufacturers, regulators and the broadcast industry gathered to discuss the growing adoption of DAB radio in the car.

According to WorldDAB, in 2016, 4.6 million new cars were sold with DAB across Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland Denmark and Australia. In Norway 98 percent of new cars are fitted with DAB as standard, with the U.K. at 87 percent and Switzerland at 66 percent.

The event also highlighted DAB developments in host-country Germany, where, according to reports, population coverage now stands at 96 percent and a second national commercial multiplex has just been awarded.

The country’s digital radio initiatives include a nationwide DAB+ marketing campaign from ARD and Deutschlandradio as well as a Digital Radio Action Plan, which was published in February by Dorothee Bär, Parliamentary State secretary to the Federal Minister for Transport and Digital Infrastructure. In addition, said WorldDAB, there will now be a series of discussions with the individual states (Länder), led by Rhineland-Palatinate (Heike Raab) and the BMVI (Dorothee Bär).

Also during the conference, the WorldDAB Automotive User Experience Group unveiled its latest research findings on the digital radio user experience in cars. The study asked consumers how easy it is to find and start the DAB radio and search for stations, along with their understanding of DAB terminology and services. The press release can be found here.
