Yore Will Head WAMU

Former Marketplace leader will serve as GM

J.J. Yore, a veteran content producer and public radio executive who helped build the nationally-syndicated “Marketplace” into one of public radio’s most popular programs, will join Washington’s WAMU(FM) as general manager Aug. 1.

WAMU 88.5 manages seven radio stations, seven websites and four Internet streams. Yore’s multiplatform experience with a national public media organization was a key factor during the selection process.

“The past decade has been one of tremendous achievement for WAMU, and now operating from its new broadcast center, we are excited about our future potential,” said David Taylor, chief of staff of the American University president, to whom the station also reports.

Yore previously served as general manager of the “Marketplace” portfolio, which includes “Marketplace Morning Report” and “Marketplace Money.” A co-creator, producer and editor of “Marketplace,” he helped to spur the program’s growth from a half-hour program with 600,000 listeners to a brand staffed by more than 60 journalists delivering multiple programs and digital news content. He has worked with Boston’s WGBH(FM), Oregon Public Broadcasting, Portland, Ore., WHYY (FM) in Philadelphia and WLRN(FM) in Miami, as well as The New York Times, Frontline, the BBC and ProPublica.

Most recently, Yore has worked as a public media consultant.

Yore started his career working for The Washington Weekly and served as editor and assistant publisher of the public media-focused Current newspaper, which is now published by American University’s School of Communication.
