Clear Channel Completes Tagging Infrastructure

6.27.2008

Clear Channel Radio says all of its 352 multicast channels now are ready to support Apple iTunes tagging.

Earlier this year the company announced it had made its 340+ primary HD Radio stations compatible. Thus more than 700 Clear Channel HD Radio stations are now tagging-capable, including multicast channels.

The technology allows users to “tag” songs for later playback or purchase on HD-R receivers that have an iPod dock.

Because of the broadcaster’s collaboration with iTunes, iPods can now continuously be refreshed with new songs discovered on radio, Clear Channel Radio President/CEO John Hogan stated. The radio group cited a recent survey from sonoro audio which found that radio was still the number one way that consumers prefer to listen to music followed by iPods.

Using tagging-capable HD-R receivers from Polk Audio and Alpine, users can press the “Tag” button on the radios to preview, purchase and download select songs.

Polk Audio’s I-Sonic Entertainment System 2 was the first receiver to market with iTunes Tagging and is available at 200 Apple stores, some Best Buys and online. Alpine has two aftermarket auto iTunes Tagging devices: iDA-X100 Digital Media Receiver and IVA-W505 2-DIN Mobile Media Station.

Here’s a list of all of Clear Channel Radio’s HD2 channels. For instance, in Los Angeles, the company offers “Slow Jams,” “KIIS FM New Music HD2,” “erockster,” “Pride Radio” and “KOST Classics.”
