APT said the Euroradio section of the European Broadcasting Union chose the WorldNet Oslo as the codec platform to be used as part of an overhaul of its audio network that covers the continent.
The manufacturer said the codecs will be deployed by the main broadcasters of each EBU member country to enable the sharing of 3,500 concerts per year in stereo and surround sound, and that the platform would facilitate migration of the network to IP-based delivery next year.
The existing E1 network used for the purpose included numerous J.57 codecs. The new platform had to be modular and provide compatibility with the existing E1 / J.57 infrastructure as well as the new IP network.
APT said an important goal was reduction of the audio bandwidth for delivery via satellite. Following the switch to an IP network early next year, the Euroradio division will run Enhanced apt-X coding with a new stereo bit rate of 576 kbps, it said. The codecs will enable delivery of live concerts via the EBU Eutelsat satellite.
