The RF64 file format specification [PDF], which supports the storage of multichannel audio data in a single audio file, is designed to meet longer-term needs for multichannel sound in broadcasting and archiving.
Developed by DAVID Systems in cooperation with the European Broadcasting Union, an RF64 file builds on the basic Microsoft RIFF/WAVE specification to support either, or both: larger than 4 GB file sizes and a maximum of 18 surround channels, stereo downmix channel and bitstream signals with non-PCM–coded data.
The specification is based on the Microsoft Wave Format Extensible for multichannel parameters.
One advantage of RF64 is that it allows the 4 GB barrier on file size. Because downloading such large files may be impractical over many Internet connections, a tool that can generate such files is needed.
The RF64 Generator allows developers and system suppliers to create RF64 reference files. It creates reference files in standard sample rates (44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96 kHz) and resolutions (16 and 24 bit) by compiling sampled audio portions stored within the application.
