NPR Takes No Position on FM IBOC Power Increase

by Leslie Stimson, 2.28.2008
Leslie Stimson is the News Editor and Washington Bureau Chief for Radio World.

NPR Labs is studying a variety of IBOC coverage improvements, including elevated IBOC power, and will have more to say about this research at the upcoming NAB Broadcast Engineering Conference.

But for now, the group is still evaluating the difference between analog and digital coverage, as well as interference to analog FM for a mapping project involving all 850 CPB-qualified public radio stations.

It’s premature to say how NPR Labs will come down on the power increase, John Kean and Mike Starling tell me.

They wanted to clarify their stance after we published an online link to a letter to the editor of another publication in which Geoff Mendenhall of Harris said NPR was part of elevated FM IBOC power testing conducted by Ibiquity and subsequently reviewed by NAB’s Digital Radio Committee. NPR was not part of that testing.
