NAB Sneak Peek: Tieline Adds to Genie Features

New firmware and codecs arrive

Codec maker Tieline is bringing new Genie Distribution IP codec features to the NAB Show.

Leading the way is new firmware. Version 2.8.xx supports the sending and receiving of three simultaneous multicast or multi-unicast audio streams. That allows for Genie Distribution to send three mono or stereo streams to multiple markets from a single Genie IP codec.

Tieline has also announced that it has Fraunhofer’s AAC-LD, AAC-ELD and AAC-ELDv2 to the basket of algorithms standard with the company’s Genie, Merlin and Bridge-IT Pro and Bridge-IT XTRA codecs.

Tieline VP Sales APAC/EMEA Charlie Gawley explained: “AAC-LD and AAC-ELD are popular with many broadcasters … AAC-ELDv2 can deliver good quality stereo connections at bit rates as low as 24 kbps. This is ideal for live remotes when high bit rates are difficult to achieve over cellular networks due to congestion or bandwidth restrictions.”

In addition, on the Opus codec front, Tieline has announced that the Genie Distribution and Merlin Plus IP codecs support up to six simultaneous streams of Opus encoding.

Tieline’s VP Sales Americas John Lackness said, “Tieline recently completed DSP optimization to support this encoding solution, which has been eagerly anticipated by broadcast engineers who use Merlin PLUS in particular.”

He added, “Many networks simultaneously connect multiple Report-IT Enterprise app users to Merlin PLUS codecs and they can now use Opus to stream 7 kHz quality mono audio at only 14.4 kbps. This is a huge advantage in regions where network bandwidth constraints exist and highly efficient encoding is required.”

Tieline has recently been very supportive of the Opus codec, saying that “Opus incorporates technology from the well-known Silk and Celt codecs and is ideal for live broadcast situations because of its capacity to deliver high quality, real-time IP audio at low bit-rates and extremely low delay 2.5 ms at higher bit rates.”
